ESCORTS IN TORONTO
Prostitution is common around the world and has existed throughout the history of man. However, several societies consider it illegal due to their moral and religious beliefs. Prostitution has been a problematic issue in Canada, and no consensus has been reached about its status quo. There is general disagreement between those who want it legalized and those who want it prohibited throughout the country. Supporters of the trade believe that prohibition denies sex workers the regulatory and legal protections, and therefore, makes them vulnerable to abuse. Conservatives, on the other hand, believe that it is an unacceptable and exploitative part of the society, which needs to be illegalized. Currently, prostitution is illegal, although the number of escort girls or prostitutes has been on the rise and, hence, a major concern.
Asians make a significant percentage of escort girls in Toronto, Oriental call girls Toronto. However, a majority of these individuals do not have the legal status of being in the country. For instance, in 2015, around 500 women, mostly from South Korea and China, were smuggled into the country as prostitutes (AFK 2015). This case is just one of the few examples of rings of prostitution in the country. Although this is part of the recent cases, Asian escort girls have long been on high demand in Toronto, Mississauga, North York, . For instance, according to Hess (1997), there was a large ring of sex slavery of Asian girls, as reported in the 1990s. Although selling sex services is illegal throughout the country, the sex trade black market has been flourishing in large cities, including Toronto. Today, young Asian prostitutes are still on high demand, with a majority being underage.
Due to inadequate or lack of international sanctions, both immigration officials and police face challenges in dealing with the smuggling of sex workers from Asian countries. A majority of them enter the country through the ports and borders with the United States, while others use fake visas to gain entry. More so, considering that Canada has easier immigration laws when compared to other countries like the United States, it has become an easy target for prostitutes. As opposed to publicly displaying their services, a majority of Asian prostitutes operate their businesses in either massage parlors or houses (Armstrong 2019). People in the business of smuggling escort girls also make millions of dollars from selling women and girls from such countries as Malaysia and Thailand to brothels in Toronto. These services are even higher in areas with individuals of Asian descent as the majority of the clients are from the Asian community. The trade is also facilitated by an international network that procures both women and girls who are then funneled into Canada and neighboring countries, especially the United States.
Additionally, some of the Asian cultures, such as Thailand, are characterized by sex bondage, which in some cases, is facilitated by families. Such girls sold by their families often get to prostitution circuits, including those in Toronto. Some of the girls might also be promised good jobs but only to find themselves in sex slavery (Pelley 2018). However, once in a foreign country, it becomes difficult to escape or seek help, especially when they cannot speak major Canadian languages, such as English and French. These areas of weaknesses in Asian countries and poor international cooperation on the topic, therefore, significantly contribute to the growth of Asian escort girls in Toronto and major cities around Canada. As a result, while some of the prostitutes have voluntarily chosen prostitution, others have been forced into the trade.
With the prevalent claims that sex work has fueled human trafficking, city by-law enforcement and police officers have been accused of over-policing holistic centers and body rub parlors. Between 2014 and 2017, holistic centers received around 1604 notices for noncompliance, especially regarding wearing certain clothes and medical checks for female employees (Armstrong 2019). For this reason, numerous groups have joined efforts to rally against using human trafficking for policing holistic centers and body rub parlors. Above all, the city licensed massage parlors and spas play a huge role in the sex trafficking of girls from Asian countries (Pelley 2018). As a result, the number of Asian escort girls in the city is bound to continue growing as long as most of these businesses continue to operate.
In brief, although prostitution is illegal in Toronto and Canada in general, the number of sex workers continues to grow. The growth can be attributed to the high number of Asian girls and women who are trafficked into the country to engage inprostitution. While some enter the country legally, others are smuggled. The illicit trade continues to happen in massage parlors, spas, and holistic centers. Despite the efforts of law enforcement to handle the situation, it has been challenging, considering poor international cooperation on the issue as well as weaker immigration laws in Canada. The sex trade and prostitution are likely to continue growing as the number ofmassage parlors and holistic centers increases.
